Yuri!!! on ICE: born to make history (not a continuation)

Via the Yuri On Ice official X account, it has finally been announced that after seven years since the series ended, the upcoming film Adolescence, which was supposed to serve as a follow-up in some way, has been officially cancelled.

The cultural memory I have of YOI is one of fervent popularity. Perhaps not to the same heights as, say, Hazbin Hotel, but almost that big with similar energy.

As for myself, I’ve always been one of those fans who wished it had been gayer. I recommend watching Super Eyepatch Wolf’s and GoatJesus’s videos to understand that subject. However, despite any criticisms I have, it’s baffling that something as big as what YOI was back in 2016 would slip by like this.

We won’t know for sure what happened (The Pedantic Romantic has made a video about why anime journalism is made difficult in Japan), but I think Otaku Spirit posed some believable theories. He points out that MAPPA doesn’t own YOI, though who owns YOI is still unclear to me. It seems to have multiple owners. Furthermore, Otaku Spirit explains that MAPPA does own the anime of all these shounen series they’ve been snatching up. In other words…
